Very powerful question for America

As we come to the end of the year and look back at the many news items, it worth asking some important questions. One question that Joel Rosenberg has been asking is this: Is America in a Jonah moment or a Nahum moment? Let me explain.

When Jonah preached to the city of Ninevah (the capital of the Assyrian empire), they repented. The king arose from his throne, removed his robe, and covered himself in sackcloth and sat in ashes (Jonah 3:6). He then sent out a decree to the people, and God spared the city from the impending disaster (Jonah 3:10).

That generation of Ninevites listened and turned from their sins toward the Lord. Following generations did the same until 150 years later when another generation of Ninevites refused to listen to the Word of God.

Nahum then pronounces a woe upon Nineveh. “Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder—no end to the prey! The crack of the whip, and the rumble of the wheel galloping horse and bounding chariot! Horsemen charging, flashing sword and glittering spear, hosts of slain, heaps of corpses dead bodies without end—they stumble over bodies!” This is the vivid description of the destruction that was to come to Nineveh in 612 B.C.

Is America in a Jonah moment? Or are we in a Nahum moment? More than a million abortions are performed unabated. More states have sanctioned same-sex marriage. Politicians in Washington add more than a trillion dollars of national debt every year. We are shocked at the violence in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Most of us recognize that if we as a people and a country continue to turn away from God, the problems in our society will grow worse. Are we ready to repent, or will we be like the people Paul talked about who were “holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power” (2 Timothy 3:5).

Joel Rosenberg asks a good question. I suspect that what happens next year will give us an answer. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

Happy birthday Ludwig! 1770-1827

Beethoven was probably born on December 16th, 1770. He was baptized on December 17th, 1770. Children at the time were usually baptized the day after their birth. We also know that Beethoven himself celebrated his birthday on December 16th.

The last ten years of his life he was totally deaf.

Beethoven came to terms with his deafness in a dynamic, constructive way. In a letter to a physician friend, written five months after a despairing letter, it becomes clear that Beethoven, as always, stubborn, unyielding and struggling against destiny, saw his deafness as a challenge to be fought and overcome:

Free me of only half this affliction and I shall be a complete,
mature man. You must think of me as being as happy as it is
possible to be on this earth - not unhappy. No! I cannot endure
it. I will seize Fate by the throat. It will not wholly conquer
me! Oh, how beautiful it is to live - and live a thousand times over!

Praying

This Scripture has really Ministered to me in light of the tragedy in Newtown...

2 Cor. 1:3, 4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Good info for Arlington commuters...

UP Rail Project to Cause Significant Crossing Closures in January

Arlington drivers will be dealing with unprecedented detours and road closures in January, when a Union Pacific track renewal project moves eastward from Fort Worth to Dallas. It is a major railway improvement which is going to require the simultaneous closure of four to five railroad crossings in Arlington for several days at a time.  The project is expected to begin in Fort Worth on January 1 and UP estimates the track renewal project should reach Arlington around January 16 and last roughly eight days.

The project, called TRT 909 is replacing rail and installing concrete ties on a 13 mile stretch of rail which runs parallel to Division.  It will move across the city at rate of about two miles per day, in four phases, greatly impacting north and southbound traffic.

Initially, it will require the closure of the following crossings for approximately four to five daysBowen Road, Davis Street, Cooper Street, Center Street and Mesquite Street.  The railroad crossings will remain closed 24 hours a day during all phases of the track renewal.

Arlington public safety officials are working to create detours to lessen the impact on emergency services but say the closures could have a significant impact.

For the latest information on the UP track renewal project and updated maps of the roadways as they are closed, follow the City of Arlington on Twitter @CityOfArlington or sign up for email updates at MyArlingtonTx.com
