Kerby's Point of View - Military Voting

We must pray...2 Chronicles 7:14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Military Voting
by Kerby Anderson

Should people in the military be allowed to vote? Everyone would probably agree to that question. Should we make it easier for people in the military to vote since many of them serve overseas? That is a different question and is the subject of a lawsuit in Ohio.

Ohio is a battleground state with 18 electoral votes. No Republican has ever been elected president without carrying the Buckeye state. So it should not be surprising that election laws in the state are being given great scrutiny. The Obama campaign has sued the statedover it new voting rules which allow the military more flexibility in voting. Service members are given three more days of early voting than the general population.

Ohio did this because members of the Armed Forces are often subject to restriction and scheduling conflicts. It isn’t easy to drop your rifle at a moment’s notice, vote, and then mail in your ballot. But the Obama campaign argues that the Ohio provision is unconstitutional and “arbitrary.” But one has to wonder if the real concern is that the military often vote Republican. For example, a recent Gallup poll among veterans showed Mitt Romney leading Barack Obama 58 to 34 percent.

Many of us remember the 2000 Presidential election when over 1,500 ballots from overseas military members were thrown out by the people involved in the Florida recount. Later the ballots were reinstated, but the controversy about military voting apparently remains to this day.

During the last presidential election, only 20 percent of the 2.5 million-member military was able to successfully vote by absentee ballot. Two years ago, it dropped to merely 5 percent. While it is no doubt true that many do not vote due to apathy, it is also true that many would like to vote if we made it easier for them to vote. The Ohio law aimed it making it easier for them to cast a ballot in what will be a very important election.

This latest controversy over military voting, along with the battles over voter ID, illustrates how important this election is to both political parties. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

True Encouragement...not fluff

A side note to this since it seemed to have been taken wrong by just a few...the folks that have been instrumental in my life never told me how good or great I was, they never sugar coated the message of life or any other message they shared with me but, like any good instructor, they always hit me, as it were, "right between the eyes" with the truth, most times it is what I guess some call "tough love" and many times NOT what I really wanted to hear, but what I really needed.

Their encouragement always came in the form of now that you have and know the truth, pull yourself up by your bootstraps and go get em'! I notice our Father God does that very thing. From start to finish in the Bible He tells us the Truth, His Truth and not just a humans perspective! And, as I mentioned, many times it's Truth that maybe we really don't like or want to hear, but it's God's Love because He knows better and it changes us for the better. He lets His friends and family know what their doing wrong, how to change, tells us what's coming, and then makes sure we know His Love, patience, Grace, loving kindness and care for us and, that those never never end and He will see us through! Just as the Word says...our fathers taught and disciplined us as best they knew how but God's teaching and discipline is always perfect, and so is His encouragement!

The builders referred to in Haggai had been under much stress and pounding from the enemy. God never pulled any punches with them but made sure that Haggai and the Prophets gave them the timely encouragement they much needed. I've been very blessed to have been raised by and those that have crossed my path to share with me how it is and how it's probably going to be. They never puffed me up but they were there to encourage and push me harder to be the best person I could be, in whatever endeavor I was in! Anyone that knows me very well, and Cara could sure testify, knows that I don't beat around the bush about things. But they also know that when you need encouragement, it might start out with what you really don't want to hear but will end up, as I've been taught, you can do this, for according to Philippians 4:13...I can do, and so can you, do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us!

We all need and the body of Christ needs the Truth of God's Word. And, in that Word is everything we need for life and Godliness. Many times I've become discouraged about life in general and sometimes I've been a little discouraged about what I've read in the Word. It seems that at those times, if I'm open to hearing and listening to the Father's voice, He comes with the encouragement I need, just at the right time! He's no respecter of persons and what He does for one He will do for you too!

Better be sure...

I like this William Wilberforce (Amazing Grace) quote... kinda reminds me of the saying "ignorance of the law is no excuse" and, goes along with Romans chapter 1, especially versus 16-32.

“You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know.”

More great news regarding Texas Real Estate...

The Texas real estate market continues to show marked improvements over last year, according to the 2012-Q2 edition of the Texas Quarterly Housing Report. Here are some highlights from the report:

  • The median sales price of Texas homes in the second quarter of 2012 was $161,400, which is 7.45% more than 2011-Q2.
  • The average sales price had a similar jump, up 7.13% from second quarter 2011, to $213,674.
  • In addition to statewide improvements in sales volume and price, the "months inventory" figure improved. Indicating the balance between supply and demand, the Texas market featured 5.9 months of inventory in 2012-Q2, which is 2.2 months less than 2011-Q2. The Real Estate Center cites 6.5 months of inventory as a market in which demand is balanced with supply.
  • In the second quarter of 2012, 67,334 single-family homes were sold in Texas, 13.04% more than the second quarter of 2011.

Texas has been leading the economic recovery and these results are more proof that our state is one of the nation’s best places to own a home. Now, we must protect the high quality of life that fueled that recovery and work on absorbing the growth of our state. That is the focus of the Texas Association of REALTORS® as we once again begin preparing to advocate for Texas homeowners during the 83rd session of the Texas Legislature in 2013.
