Old Town Cleaners-Burleson

After moving to Burleson several years ago I've had a hard time finding a cleaners that was comparable to Hillcrest in Arlington. Gone through several that were very disappointing, not only poor quality but the service stunk! Not looking for a whole lot, just act like you appreciate the business and want more! 

Actually gave up and kept taking my clothes to Hillcrest. I am glad I tried one more, Old Town Cleaners, 139 West Ellison Street, Burleson, (817) 447-6355. Their quality of work has been excellent and their service is tops. Even remembering my name on only my second visit. Here is a new concept, they don't flatten out my cuffs on my shirts when they press them but press them correctly!! Seems like a simple thing but I've found it's not with other cleaners. 
I highly recommend them!

TAR economic forecast

Called a slow recovery, still issues but not as many in Texas! Stable prices and in many areas of Tx some rising prices.

Great time to buy for those that can, been that way for awhile but some are just waking up to that fact. But, then comes in the difficulty of obtaining a mortgage. The loans are there, you need to know who is and want to loan the money!

Do you think foreclosures and short sales have bottomed out? The speaker from NAR thinks so.

Bottom line, its been a rough 4 yrs! But...things looking up!

Constitution No Longer the Model

Should the U.S. Constitution be the model for the constitutions of other countries?
If you asked that question a few decades ago, I would think most Americans and most
Supreme Court justices would answer with a resounding “Yes.” That apparently isn’t the
case any longer.

Recently, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said on Egyptian television that if she
were drafting a constitution, she wouldn’t look to ours. Instead, she recommended the
South African Constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, or the
European Convention on Human Rights.

Why did she recommend those constitutions over ours? These other documents
are full of enumerated rights. Citizens are given all sorts of rights by their government.
But, if the government grants those rights, it can just as easily take them away.

The U.S. Constitution actually does just the opposite. It lists a limited number of
enumerated powers in Article I, Section 8. The rest of the powers are reserved to the
states and the people. It doesn’t list the rights citizens have because these are unalienable
rights. According to the Declaration of Independence, these rights already exist because
they are granted by the Creator. It is also worth mentioning that some of the founders
thought a bill of rights was unnecessary.

The argument for limiting government rather than listing the rights of citizens is
losing the day. According to an article in Investor’s Business Daily, a study is about to be
published in the New York University Law Review revealing that our
Constitution “appears to be losing its appeal as a model for constitutional drafters
elsewhere.” In the past, many of the world’s democracies modeled their constitution after
ours. By the 1980s and 1990s, that trend reversed.

It appears that more and more countries are opting for granting rights to food,
housing, and health care. That’s not a prescription for limited government but rather an
excuse to grow government and take more in taxes to pay for everything it promises. I’m

Music and the Internet

Received a message from our excellent guitar player at Church, Mr. John Hancock, that we are doing for a special song this morning Revelation Song. He sent me a link to hear it sung by Kari Jobe. I like the link and even though I'm familiar with the song I picked up some ideas from her drummer. But what I enjoy about the Internet and especially you tube is tapping into how other drummers play it just by typing in "drums to Revelation Song". So now for this morning I have about 3 sheets of drum music I've done from 4 different drummers I listened to!

Okay, here is how this works, I will borrow a little out of each, the key word there being borrow! With the opportunity to listen to other accomplished percussionists it gives me some ideas I might not have thought of.

By the way, because I'm a fan I've already seen how I can add a little Stuart Copeland into the mix as well. I see a Steve Young drum video on the horizon! Thanks to my excellent drum teacher Logan Swords, owner of Swords Music, Ft Worth's oldest operational music store now in his 43rd year, who taught me to play the drums to many, many kinds of music!

Hall of Fame Gary Carter, AKA "The Kid"

Just saw where Gary Carter passed away at age 57. Man did I love watching this guy play baseball. He always played with an enthusiasm for the game that made you want to watch and that huge smile of his was contagious!

Standing firm

I've noticed one of the hardest things to do in life, for me anyway, is to not answer back and retaliate when your being accused of things and when other's judge you on what they have heard. I learned from my Mom and Grandma that Truth ALWAYS will prevail and to keep your mouth shut. Easier said than done because it usually doesn't look that way!

But, looking back all these somewhat many years, they were right. Actually their teaching is completely Scripture based and presents itself as a natural law. Some call it what goes around comes around. The Word says in several places that there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed and nothing covered that will not be uncovered.  Galatians 6:7 says Do not be deceivedGod is not mocked ; for whatever man sowsthis he will also reap.

Another Truth I've learned that, maybe your not at fault or didn't do the things your accused of but, ain't nobody perfect, and that includes me, so that's a pretty good place to start, with myself. James 5:9 says Do not complainbrethrenagainst one anotherso that you yourselves may not be judged ;beholdthe Judge is standing right at the door. And in 2 Cor. 13:5 Paul admonishes us to "test & examine" ourselves, or, what fruits is my life producing!
 Now, when these Truths are applied and you begin to see the faults in yourself, it becomes very easy to forgive, keep your mouth shut and pray for mercy, for yourself and for others! Let me see here, Ah yes, remove the large piece of wood from my own eye, THEN I can help my fellow man remove the splinter from his eye.

Foundational, simple teaching that, again, not easy to do but when we rely on Jesus, the Living Word and His Mercies & Loving kindness, we see great changes, first in ourselves and then in those we forgive and pray for. Wait a minute, I thought this had to do with others accusations and not me? Nope, it all starts with me and the power of the choice I make in how I will deal with any and all situations in life!

An opportunity to learn and give!

I went on Facebook yesterday to check on one of my blogs I had sent out regarding private property rights and noticed a cystic fibrosis logo that caught my eye. It was a post from a young lady I went through school with and it was about her sister in law that worked at Children's Medical in Dallas as a respiratory therapist for the CF kids. Her niece just passed away from CF and another niece is battling the disease in the hospital now. Another family member had also died from CF and they have a family member that, being an artist and losing several members to CF has been drawing logos, etc. to bring awareness to the disease. Small world isn't it!

If anyone does not know about CF or would like to know more, you can click on this link to the cystic fibrosis foundation. Great info and if you have it in your heart, go ahead, click this link and make a donation, $5, $10 or any amount will be appreciated. 

I typically don't send things about CF even though Cara, my daughter died from this in 2008.  Usually my blogs are regarding Cook Children's Hospital and doing promotional things for them. But after reading about Cindy's family and seeing the drawings of the logos, well I just had to post this!

More God, Less Crime

Faith-based organizations and people of faith can make a profound impact on the
crime rate and the recidivism rate in our prisons. This is the argument that renowned
criminologist Byron Johnson makes in his book, More God, Less Crime. He is a
professor at Baylor University and was on my radio program to talk about the many
success stories and the transformative power of faith.

Sadly most social scientists and even criminologists seem reluctant to make the
connection between faith and the impact religious perspectives could have on America’s
crime problem. Dr. Johnson believes that a faith-based ministry or message doesn’t
resonate with most social scientists. Many are even hostile to religion as demonstrated by
the opening chapter in his book entitled, “The Last Acceptable Prejudice.”

Dr. Johnson also says that faith-based organizations are merely tolerated within
the criminal justice system. In some places, they are seen as valuable and even helpful. In
other jurisdictions, they are viewed with suspicion. This is unfortunate since the criminal
justice system is facing cutbacks and shrinking budgets. Prison ministries like Bill Glass,
Prison Fellowship, and Kairos Prison Ministry can provide people and programs that can
make a difference. Faith-based organizations of all kinds can provide volunteers and
educators to help with programs in life skills and adult education.

The book is full of positive examples of what can happen when Christians get
involved in their local community. He tells the story of “The Boston Miracle” where
police and pastors worked together to break the stranglehold gangs had in the
community. He also talks about the mission of the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise
and violence-free zones. And he even gives practical advice on the important issue of
prisoner reentry and aftercare.

Most importantly, he provides a review of the literature so that churches and faith-
based organizations can show skeptics that the title of the book is true: More God, Less
Crime. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

Under all the land part 2

The Virginia Declaration of Rights was drawn upon by Thomas Jefferson in his drafting the Declaration of Independence, and by James Madison in his drafting the Constitution and Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments to the Constitution).  

The danger of government interference with the free enjoyment of private property rights was, in other words, foreseen from the first moment of the founding of this Nation.  And, as I've posted recently on this site, the danger of public infringement of private property rights is growing.

So begins the preamble to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice  of the National Association of Realtors®.  This preamble, of course, is not a new statement of principle, but a restatement of one of the founding principles of the United States of America.

On June 12, 1776, the Virginia Constitutional Convention adopted the Virginia Declaration of Rights , written by George Mason, which begins with the statement:

That all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety.

Get the facts re. Texas Real Estate

I have had several of my clients ask me about this so thought it important to re post this article from Texas Association of Realtor's. Wondering if you have heard this too?

  
Do your clients owe a 3.8% tax on their home sale?

A rumor about a 3.8% federal tax on all home sales has again hit the in-boxes of Texas consumers and real estate agents. So, is there such a tax for all home sales? No.

The facts are that individuals with incomes over $200,000 a year ($250,000 for married couples) will be subject to a 3.8% tax on profits of more than $250,000 ($500,000 for couples) from the sale of a primary residence. So, a husband and wife who make more than $250,000 a year and sell their home for $510,000 more than their purchase price would pay $380.

Happy birthday...

Oh yes, that was yesterday! Oh well, I've noticed that men are usually not able to milk their birthdays for much past "the day" but I'm okay with that!

I wanted to say thank you to all that emailed, texted, called and face booked me wishing me a happy birthday. (face booked...sounds like something I had to do community service at Mission Arlington for...but I digress & that was a long time ago! Still thank Miss Tillie for her Ministry to me back then)

You helped make my day very special, yep, even at 59 it was a great day.
 A special thank you to Sheryl who bought me cool stuff and fixed like a really great dinner as well. She actually knows what wine to serve...a new concept!
Also want to say thanks to Steve and Debbie for the cool Harley shirt and for Danny Boyer for noticing that it was so nice of the NFL to have such a special event to celebrate my Birthday!

Texas HOA rule changes

Homeowners in HOAs now have a few more property rights...

Thanks to the last Texas Legislature and efforts by the Texas Association of REALTORS®, property owners in homeowners associations are now guaranteed the right to place religious displays on their front doors; fly the U.S., state, and military flags; and install rain barrels and solar panels on their property. Other recent legislative changes will make HOA meetings and records more accessible to all HOA members and will prevent HOAs from using nonjudicial foreclosures powers.

Texas Association of REALTORS® Vice President of Governmental Affairs Mark Lehman was quoted in a San Antonio Express-News article summarizing the changes.

Texas Quarterly Housing Report

Texas home-sales stats: “Flat” is the new “up”


If statewide or market-specific statistics for home sales interest you, check out the Texas Quarterly Housing Report released today by the Texas Association of REALTORS®. The report ... using MLS data compiled by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University ... shows a 6% increase in sales volume in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010. Median sales price did not change.

“Looking at the year as a whole, sales volume and median price in Texas were essentially flat compared to 2010," said Jim Gaines, Ph.D., an economist with the Real Estate Center. "However, Texans should know that ‘flat’ is the new ‘up’ because our state still outpaces national averages by eight to 10% in both sales volume and median price.”
