Day after election results...

I really appreciated Kirby Anderson's Point of View commentary earlier today that I also posted on  https://twitter.com/StephenLYoung and facebook. Good encouragement and Scripture for the time!

I had a restless night as I along with many many more was concerned for our Country. When I woke up this morning here are the Scriptures that I woke up meditating upon and I hope, along with Kirby's points, helps if needed. Sure helped me because I sure did need it!

Sometimes it's just plain good and comforting to get back to the firm foundation of God's Word and make sure were standing on the solid rock!

Close Elections
by Kerby Anderson

Commentary ThumbnailToday is Election Day, and I hope you will take the time to vote if you haven’t already. In the past, many groups circulated articles and e-mails talking about the importance of one vote. In the last few elections, we haven’t needed these reminders because the current elections provided numerous illustrations.

For example, George W. Bush won the 2000 Presidential election by the slimmest of margins. His election essentially was decided by 537 votes in Florida. He won re-election in the 2004 Presidential election again by very slim margins. He won the 20 electoral votes from the state of Ohio with 50.8 percent of the vote.

Over the years, I have collected some stories of elections that resulted in a tie. You can’t get any closer than that. Consider the story of Penny Pullen in Illinois. A number of years ago, it appeared she lost a primary election by 31 votes. However, there were many irregularities in the ballots. Judge Francis Barth concluded that the election was a draw and ordered a coin toss. She lost the election on a coin toss. Later she found out that many members of her church hadn’t bothered to vote in the primary election and could have made a crucial difference.

In 2006, there was an even more interesting story of an electoral tie. William Crawford and Jean Miller both received an identical number of votes in an election in Ohio. William Crawford was especially upset. You might ask why. Well, it turned outthat his two sons failed to vote that day. His son Jim lives across the street from him. His other son Andy is a college student who lives at home with him. Neither took the time to go to the polls.

Would the outcome of these elections be different if a few people in Penny Pullen’s church had bothered to vote or if either of William Crawford’s sons had bothered to vote? I think we all know the answer.

We may not have any votes tomorrow that end in a tie, but you never know. Does one vote count? Just ask Penny Pullen or William Crawford. I’m Kerby Anderson, and that’s my point of view.

Privilege and opportunity

Our Country is at a major crossroads, more dangerous than I imagine any of us really realize.

And please do not be like so many that feel it's a waste of time to vote or that what does my vote matter, both the candidates are no good. Sadly I hear that a lot and even worse, I heard it in Church one day, the statement that this is all we've got to vote for? In a few words that person was making a very bold statement that it just didn't matter. I disagree and I see in God's Word where He does not agree with that either. We've been given a great privilege and opportunity in this great Country of ours, the right to vote and make a stand for what we believe in. So do it or don't complain when it does not turn out like you like it.
